Pupil mental health: trauma and PTSD
Understand the impact of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on pupils, and how to support them.

Before you begin this course, we'd recommend that you take our broader eLearning course on understanding pupil mental health and wellbeing.
By the end of this 45-minute course, you'll be able to:
- Explain what 'trauma' and 'PTSD' are and how they affect children
- Identify signs that a child may be struggling with trauma or PTSD
- Respond to a child's behaviour 'in the moment'
- Support pupils with trauma, in their daily life at school
You'll finish with a short assessment to test your knowledge and put your learning into practice.

She provides consultancy for designated safeguarding leads (DSLs), heads, senior leaders and governors. She has experience in frontline and managerial child protection matters including school improvement, casework and training
- Julie Harmieson, director of education and national strategy for Trauma Informed Schools UK (TISUK), education consultant, former headteacher of a primary alternative provision and former trust inclusion support for trauma-informed practice in a large MAT in Cornwall
- Sara Alston, a practising SENCO teacher and an education consultant and trainer for SEA Inclusion & Safeguarding, specialising in special educational needs and safeguarding
